Considered to be a master of the sea story, English-born William Hope Hodgson wrote from experience gained firsthand at sea. He went on to explore the genres of horror, science fiction and the supernatural, inspired by such authors as H. G. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe. Most of his work — essays, short stories, novels, and poetry — was written in the eleven years before he was killed in World War I.
