American composer Victor Herbert (1859–1924) enjoyed success as a cellist and conductor but is best known for his Broadway operettas, including "Babes in Toyland." A founder of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), Herbert also wrote orchestral, piano, and choral works.
