For centuries, Japan conducted a large and successful trade in silk across the 4,000-mile Silk Road that helped develop the early civilizations of the East and laid some of the groundwork for the modern world. This unique collection features over 100 vibrant labels that traveled the famed Silk Road from Japan to Italy from 1900 to the 1930s.
Rarely seen in the United States, the shipping labels that identified cartons of exported Japanese silk were emblazoned with the traditional motifs of Oriental art: birds, animals, flowers, warriors, and butterflies. The images in this CD-ROM and book collection were specially chosen for their brilliance and exotic appeal.
